Mobile policy management is the process of defining, creating, deploying, updating and enforcing mobile policies. Any enterprise with a mobile workforce is probably supporting this process in one way or another. However, because mobile policies originate from various departments in an organization, such as security, telecommunications, network engineering, architecture, client services or support, there is often no single owner responsible and policies are managed in a decentralized fashion.

Most often, organizations enforce their mobile policies through either an automated in house developed program (Home-Grown), a “Paper-Based” based approach or a combination of both. The Home-Grown method involves tremendous cost of integration of point solutions and/or custom scripts developed by internal or external IT resources. The Home-Grown approach can allow for automation and enforcement of mobile policies but comes at a very high cost that increases exponentially when changes in scope or scale are required.

The Paper-Based approach puts the onus on the end–users to comply with the policies. This is problematic beause end users often do not comply and it means policies are managed through documents that need to be distributed to the mobile workforce, who in turn need to be trained. The Paper-Based approach is relatively cheaper to implement, but offers no guarantee of end-user compliance and erodes productivity because it depends on users applying policies manually.

In the worst case, some enterprises either limit the ability of their workforce to be mobile by disabling functionality or by accepting potential security or financial liability as a result of avoiding mobile policies altogether.
