Cut IT Support Costs
Eliminate Mobile Broadband Data Overage Costs
Secure the Enterprise VPN

Mobile policies need to be implemented effectively for any enterprise mobility project to achieve success, including: Facility consolidation, Tele-work, Business Continuity, Virtual office, Office Anywhere, Work from Home, Remote Access, Remote Connectivity, Desktop Replacement, Mobile Broadband and Wi-Fi Deployments.

Common applications of Trellia’s MPM solution for these projects is to:

Cut IT Support Costs

A study by Aberdeen found that a wireless, mobile workforce costs up to ten times more to manage than a traditional wired workforce. As a result, they recommend that organizations budget ten times more for operational support of mobile workers. Findings from Gartner estimate that mobile workers make, on average, one support call per mobile worker per month at a cost of $125 to $250 per incident.

Paper-based mobile policies are a major factor driving the ballooning support costs outlined above because they place the onus of compliance on end users. They result in mobile workers having to manually manage, complex technical configuration on their devices for wireless networking, proxy settings, VPN settings and a host of other mobile network access issues.

Despite the dramatic increase in IT support resulting from paper-based mobile policy management, many organizations continue to take this approach because creating home-grown solutions comes at a huge cost.

Trellia provides a cost-effective alternative that cuts IT support for mobile policies by up to 90%. Trellia’s MPM solution delivers over 50 mobile policies and related policy configurations out of the box for rapid, code-less implementation. The solution entirely automates the policy application and enforcement process, completely eliminating user intervention and resulting in far fewer IT support calls.

Eliminate Mobile Broadband Data Overage Costs

Despite its convenience for anywhere access, mobile broadband is a significant financial liability that many enterprises have accepted for lack of a solution. Some are regularly paying double or triple what they initially budgeted for access fees. Two major reasons exist for these unexpected expenses; Data Usage Charges and International Roaming Fees.

Although some mobile broadband plans are advertised as “unlimited”, many have a soft cap at which a carrier will start to charge a per MB Data Usage Charges. These hidden fees can easily double the cost of a standard $50 monthly access plan. With many mobile workers today using corporate laptops for office and personal use, VoIP applications or downloading videos and movies from iTunes or Youtube dramatically increase the chance that Data Usage Charges will be incurred.

For organizations with an international mobile workforce the threat of International Roaming Fees is even greater than Data Usage Charges. With a per MB cost of approximately $2 to $6, these charges can quickly rise into the thousands of dollars per user roaming abroad.

Trellia enables organizations to contain data usage charges and make them predictable. Our Mobile Policy Manager delivers data usage and roaming policies that can cut your costs in half. The solution allows IT to enforce the use of least cost networks, improve proxy filtering to eliminate high bandwidth internet activities and either disable or restrict international roaming.

Secure the Enterprise VPN

Corporate VPNs can fall short of delivering the benefit for which they are deployed; enabling improved mobile workforce productivity through secure remote access to corporate data and applications. In fact, regardless of brand or type (SSL or IPSec), improperly implemented VPNs can actually create security risks and put a dent in productivity.

Two principal security risks arise when corporate VPNs are implemented. The first, is a false sense of security associated with mandating VPN use without the ability to enforce the policy. Leaving the authentication of the VPN to end users leaves room for errors or complete disregard of the policy. The result is exposure of unencrypted corporate data on public networks to eavesdropping, Evil Twin or Man-in-the-middle attacks.

The second major risk is the potential for malicious use of a VPN tunnel by a hacker trying to gain access to a corporate network. In this scenario, the VPN can actually serve as a back door into a corporate network allowing the hacker to bypass corporate network security. This threat is a result of the lack of ability to enforce VPN related policies that prevent split-tunneling and network bridging.

Besides the security issues outlined above, leaving the enforcement of VPN policies to end users creates confusion that reduces workforce productivity and increases IT support calls.

Trellia provides a secure alternative that ensures 100% user compliance and eliminates complexity. Trellia’s MPM solution enables IT to automate the enforcement of corporate VPNs on public networks along with corresponding bridging and split-tunneling prevention policies.
